Robb’s Nephew - Bill Lince

When Robb returned to Bismarck, his nephew Bill was eight years old and a natural artist. Bill was captivated by Robb’s overwhelming personality, and Robb recognized Bill’s artistic potential. They spent many hours together in the ensuing years swapping stories and carving leather. They both loved to tell jokes, to listen to the blues, and to cook. In cooking together they learned that they also shared a love of HOT, hot sauce! Robb liked his food so spicy that it made him sweat. He often ate with a handkerchief to wipe his brow.

Eventually, they began traveling together throughout the US. Bill read the map while Robb took the wrong turn... Robb filmed the passing scenery as Bill held the wheel.

At each of Robb’s many classes, Bill practiced the techniques himself and assisted the students. Soon Bill was creating his own pieces, and he continues to do so today. Bill has extended his interest in leather to three-dimensional and/or functional art. He taught himself book binding, has made leather shields, and continues to adapt Robb’s techniques to create new and interesting pieces.

Bill has been asked to demonstrate his leather carving talent at local art shows and has been instrumental in teaching his stepfather, David, the techniques that were taught to him by Robb. Now David’s work is being sold throughout North Dakota.

Bill is available for teaching classes during the winter months. To contact Bill or David for information or to place an order, contact them here.
